One Hundred Years (& More) of Heritage for the Coddenham Village Stores
When Albert Gudgin bought the Coddenham shop from Mr J.P.Lewis, a grocer from Ipswich in 1923, Coddenham had unmade roads, no mains water or drainage and a limited electrical supply. Albert was one of the first people in the village to (later) own a motor-car!
This year, one hundred years on, things have changed, but the premises remain in the ownership of the Gudgin family, as a thriving community store.
To celebrate this centenary, Roy & Ann Gudgin have generously invited all members of the community, customers old and new to join them as their guests for afternoon tea from 2pm – 4.30pm on Saturday 21st July at the Coddenham Centre. There will be entertainment, and everyone is welcome!
In the evening Roy & Ann will host an event by personal invitation for shop volunteers, staff and partners to further mark this important occasion.
While in 1923, Coddenham was an isolated rural village, there were many shops! There are records of a shop on the community shop site since 1696. This and other premises will be the subject of a special exhibition by the Coddenham History Club, on display in the Coddenham Centre from the weekend of the 21st July.
Come along and be part of Coddenham’s amazing history!
You can find more information about the shop online at go to the History Club’s article here.
